On Friday evening, Union Berlin will challenge RB Leipzig in the fourteenth round of the Bundesliga.
Since the start of November, Union Berlin have managed just one win — a 1-0 result against St. Pauli — while their other recent outings have been less encouraging. They drew with Freiburg (0-0) and Bayern Munich (2-2), but suffered defeats to Heidenheim (1-2) and Wolfsburg (1-3). As a result, the Iron Bear sit 12th in the table with 15 points, a 16:22 goal difference, and a four-point buffer above the relegation zone.
RB Leipzig, free from the demands of European competition this season, occupy second place with 29 points and a 28:13 goal difference. Marco Rose’s men have recently posted convincing home victories over Stuttgart (3-1), Werder Bremen (2-0), and Eintracht Frankfurt (6-0). They also played out a goalless draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach and fell 1-3 to Hoffenheim.
Union’s home atmosphere should help them narrow the gap in quality, but only to a degree. Leipzig’s individual talent and attacking depth remain on a different level, making the visitors favourites to take all three points — even if a blowout is unlikely.
