The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 between Atalanta and Bayern Munich is scheduled for next Tuesday.
Atalanta are now the only Italian side left in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier competition after securing their place in the Round of 16 with a stunning victory over Borussia Dortmund (0–2, 4–1). However, their domestic form has been less convincing. The Bergamaschi sit only seventh in Serie A after recent setbacks against mid-table sides Sassuolo (1–2) and Udinese (2–2).
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are cruising in the Bundesliga following impressive victories over Borussia Dortmund (3–2) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (4–1). With the league title race largely under control, the record German champions can now focus fully on the Champions League. They also impressed in the group stage, finishing second while winning seven of their eight matches.
Italian teams have traditionally caused Bayern problems in Europe, but in this particular matchup Atalanta’s chances appear limited. The visitors should have the edge thanks to their superior quality and experience, and Bayern look well placed to take the advantage in the first leg.
