This Monday, Brighton will host Liverpool in the penultimate fixture of the Premier League season, a match that still holds weight — at least for the home side.
Sitting ninth with 55 points and a goal difference of 59:56, Brighton remains in contention for a spot in the UEFA Conference League. The Seagulls have shown fighting spirit recently, defeating West Ham (3-2) and Wolves (2-0), while picking up draws against Leicester (2-2) and Newcastle (1-1). Their only setback in the last five came in a 2-4 loss to Brentford.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have already sealed the Premier League title with two games to spare. With 83 points and a commanding 83:37 goal difference, they lead the table by 15 points. While the Reds have continued to perform well — claiming wins over West Ham (2-1), Leicester (1-0), and Tottenham (5-1), drawing with Arsenal (2-2), and slipping only in a 1-3 loss to Chelsea — their urgency is likely to dip now that the title is secured.
While Liverpool remains the stronger side on paper, Brighton enters this clash with far greater motivation. Chasing European qualification, the Seagulls will be eager to exploit any complacency in the visiting side. Given the contrasting levels of intensity expected, Brighton could very well edge this contest or at least come away with a valuable result.
