Matchday five of the Europa League brings Maccabi Tel Aviv and Lyon together on Thursday evening, with the fixture moved to a neutral ground in Serbia.
Maccabi Tel Aviv’s campaign has been difficult from the outset. After an encouraging 0–0 draw with PAOK on the opening matchday, the Israeli side slipped to three consecutive defeats: 1–3 against Dinamo Zagreb, 0–3 to Midtjylland, and 0–2 versus Aston Villa. With just one goal scored and eight conceded, they sit 34th in the league stage standings, their qualification prospects all but extinguished.
Lyon, meanwhile, occupy seventh place with nine points and a positive 5–2 goal difference. Despite a recent 0–2 setback against Betis, the French club remain well positioned to finish inside the top eight. Prior to that defeat, they produced a strong run of results, defeating Utrecht 1–0, Salzburg 2–0, and Basel 2–0.
On current form, Lyon appear the more complete and motivated side. While a heavy defeat for Maccabi Tel Aviv seems unlikely, the underdogs will need something special to take even a point from this encounter.
