Nice vs Saint-Etienne Prediction 29 May 2026

OGC Nice and AS Saint-Étienne will meet in the decisive second leg of their promotion/relegation playoff on May 29.

The first encounter ended in a goalless draw, leaving everything to play for in the return match. With a place in next season’s Ligue 1 at stake, neither side can afford mistakes in what is expected to be a tense and cautious battle.

Nice managed to leave Saint-Étienne with a positive result in the first leg, although the performance itself was far from convincing. The visitors focused primarily on defensive stability and rarely threatened in attack, but they accomplished their main objective by keeping the tie level ahead of the return match. Back on home soil, Nice will be expected to show greater ambition and make better use of their superior squad depth and top-flight experience.

Saint-Étienne, meanwhile, failed to take advantage of home field in the opening game. The Greens struggled to create clear opportunities and never truly looked capable of breaking down Nice’s defensive setup. That result leaves them under pressure heading into the second leg, where they will need to produce a much stronger attacking display if they hope to secure promotion. Their recent away form has also been inconsistent, which only adds to the challenge.

In our opinion, Nice enter the decisive match with a slight edge. The hosts have the experience of competing at a higher level, avoided defeat in a difficult first leg, and now have the opportunity to settle the tie in familiar surroundings. Saint-Étienne remain a dangerous opponent, but their inability to impose themselves at home could prove costly. In a match where margins are likely to be very small, Nice appear better equipped to find the breakthrough.

Prediction: Nice to win — 2.00
