Penarol vs SC Corinthians Paulista Prediction 22 May 2026

Representatives of Group E, Peñarol and Corinthians, will meet in the fifth round of the Copa Libertadores in a match that could prove decisive for the hosts’ fading playoff hopes.

The Uruguayan side currently sits at the bottom of the table with just two points and a 3:6 goal difference, leaving them with virtually no margin for error. Only victories in their remaining matches can keep Peñarol’s slim qualification chances alive, although their recent performances hardly inspire confidence. The Yellow and Blacks drew 1-1 with Santa Fe, lost 1-2 to Platense before sharing another 1-1 draw with the same opponent, and were comfortably beaten 0-2 by Corinthians earlier in the group stage.

Corinthians, meanwhile, have looked far more convincing on the continental stage than in the Brazilian Serie A, where the club continues to battle near the relegation zone. In Libertadores play, however, Timão has been extremely solid and efficient, collecting 10 points with an impressive 7:1 goal difference. The Brazilian giants defeated Platense, Peñarol, and Santa Fe by identical 2-0 scorelines, dropping points only once in a 1-1 draw away to Santa Fe.

Still, motivation could become a major factor in this encounter. Corinthians are already in a very comfortable position at the top of the group and may approach this trip with less intensity, especially considering their domestic struggles and packed schedule. Peñarol, on the other hand, understands that this is likely their final opportunity to revive the campaign and give their supporters something to celebrate. Backed by home advantage and desperation for points, the Uruguayan side could produce a far more competitive display than in the first meeting between the clubs.
