In the first round of the Primeira Liga reigning champions Sporting will face modest Rio Ave.
At the end of the 2023/24 season, Sporting scored an impressive 90 points with a goal difference of 96:29, which made them the best team in Portugal three years later. However, the Lions subsequently lost two finals to Porto - 1-2 in the domestic cup at the end of May and 3-4 in the Super Cup in early August.
Over the last month, Rio Ave played seven friendlies against Seleção Concelha (15:1), Moreirense (1:2), Arouca (3:2), Gil Vicente (1:2), Santa Clara (1:2), Nacional (1:1) and Swansea (0:3). It should be noted that in the previous campaign the Orange-Blacks finished eleventh - something similar is expected from them now.
The hosts, who have not lost their huge attacking potential over the summer, are considered the unqualified favorites of this pair. We wouldn't be surprised if Sporting rush forward from the first minute of the match and eventually bring it to a thrashing.
