Malta Gaming Authority Introduces Comprehensive ESG Hub for Online Gaming Licensees!
Last update: 21 July, 2024
This dedicated section on the MGA's website aims to provide licensees with comprehensive information and guidance on ESG reporting and best practices.
The ESG hub serves as a central repository for all information related to the Authority’s voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice. This initiative is designed to support online gaming companies in aligning with the latest ESG standards, thereby meeting the growing expectations of stakeholders and enhancing their transparency.
The primary goal of the ESG hub is to assist online gaming companies in adopting sustainable practices. The ESG Code of Good Practice, which is a cornerstone of this initiative, offers an industry-specific framework. This framework is crafted to enhance transparency, encourage consistent ESG reporting, and facilitate benchmarking among companies within the sector. It aims to complement existing industry efforts, providing a reference point for remote gaming companies to regularly assess, report on, and improve their ESG practices.
The development of the Code involved a rigorous process, including peer reviews, comprehensive research, materiality assessments, stakeholder interviews, and consultations with licensees. Covering 19 ESG topics across environmental, social, and governance categories, the Code is designed to be a robust and practical tool for the industry.
The ESG Code includes two tiers of reporting standards. Tier 1 encompasses basic ESG standards, ensuring that companies meet fundamental requirements. Tier 2, on the other hand, is geared towards more advanced ESG goals, encouraging companies to strive for higher levels of sustainability and corporate responsibility.
The Code is intended to be accessible to a wide range of companies, regardless of their size or stage of ESG integration. Entities that report under the Code will receive the MGA's ESG Code Approval Seal, a mark of recognition that signifies their commitment to sustainable practices.
The launch of the ESG hub comes on the heels of several significant regulatory actions by the MGA earlier this year. These actions include the cancellation of Tipbet's operating authorization, the approval of a recognition notice for St8.io (allowing it to operate within MGA-regulated markets), the cancellation of authorization for Super7plus, and the suspension of Rush Gaming’s authorization.
Overall, the introduction of the ESG hub marks a pivotal moment for the MGA and the online gaming industry. It underscores the Authority’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and transparent gaming environment, ultimately benefiting the industry, its stakeholders, and society at large.
