Myanmar Arrests 52 in Crackdown on Online Fraud and Illegal Gambling in Shan State
Myanmar authorities have detained 52 people as part of a coordinated crackdown on telecom fraud and illegal online gambling operations in Tachilek Township, located in Shan State (East).

The arrests were reported by the state-run newspaper, The Global New Light of Myanmar, and form part of a broader effort to dismantle cross-border scam networks operating in the region.

According to officials, a joint task force made up of security personnel carried out a series of targeted inspections following intelligence reports about online scam centers and gambling activities in the border town. The first raid took place around 11:50 a.m. at a site near the Loma Hotel in Weinkyauk Ward. During this operation, authorities arrested nine individuals, including three Chinese men and six Myanmar women, who were allegedly involved in fraudulent online schemes and illicit gambling.

Officers seized a large quantity of equipment believed to be used in these operations. The confiscated items included three all-in-one computers, 13 laptops, 320 mobile phones, 108 tablets, a printer, and six Wi-Fi routers, along with other related devices.

Later that afternoon, at approximately 2:10 p.m., authorities conducted a second raid at a residential property in the same ward. This operation led to the arrest of 43 additional suspects, including eight Chinese men, one Chinese woman from Taiwan, 27 Myanmar men, and seven Myanmar women. Investigators also seized more equipment, including 23 all-in-one computers, a monitor, a system unit, and 52 mobile phones.

In total, the two operations resulted in 52 arrests and the confiscation of a significant amount of digital infrastructure used to facilitate illegal activities. Authorities stated that all suspects will be processed in accordance with the law, and investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or networks responsible for organizing and financing these operations.

Officials emphasized that combating online fraud and illegal gambling is a national priority with international consequences. Myanmar is reportedly cooperating with both domestic agencies and neighboring countries to curb the spread of such activities. Foreign nationals implicated in these cases may face legal action or, in some instances, repatriation on humanitarian grounds, while key figures are expected to be prosecuted.
