NBA Urges CFTC to Regulate Sports Prediction Markets to Protect Game Integrity
Last update: 03 May, 2025
In a formal letter addressed to Acting Chairman Caroline D. Pham of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the league called for the development of a sports-specific regulatory framework to ensure greater oversight and safeguard the integrity of professional basketball.
The NBA emphasized that while legal sports betting is regulated at the state level with clear processes for market approval, sports prediction markets operate in a more ambiguous regulatory space. These markets are often launched through a self-certification process, bypassing traditional scrutiny and regulatory safeguards. As a result, exchanges and brokers operating in prediction markets are not held to the same reporting standards or integrity protocols that are required in regulated sports betting. This raises concerns over the potential for abuse, particularly as prediction markets continue to evolve and gain mainstream traction.
Initially focused on season-long outcomes, prediction markets have now shifted toward single-game events, with the NBA warning that even more niche offerings—such as wagers on individual player performance or officiating decisions—may soon emerge. Such developments, if left unchecked, could increase the risk of manipulation or the perception of compromised fairness in NBA contests.
The league’s letter argues that the CFTC, which currently oversees these markets, lacks a tailored regulatory approach for sports-related products. This gap, the NBA contends, leaves professional leagues like itself vulnerable, with limited avenues to monitor or investigate suspicious activity. Without mandatory cooperation between prediction market platforms and sports leagues, or requirements to report anomalies, protecting the integrity of games becomes significantly more difficult.
The NBA has urged the CFTC to engage in further dialogue and consider implementing stricter, sport-specific measures that would help detect and mitigate integrity risks. As prediction markets continue to intersect more closely with real-time gameplay, the league is seeking proactive regulatory solutions to preserve trust in its competition.
