Thai Authorities Bust Major Illegal Gambling Den in Nakhon Nayok
Last update: 04 February, 2025
The raid, which was ordered by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of cash and chips worth over 2 million baht ($0.06 million), along with various gambling equipment.
The den, located in the middle of a rice field, was reportedly operating 24 hours a day, attracting a significant number of gamblers who were transported to the site via taxis, minibuses, and vans. Over 200 individuals were found inside during the operation, which was launched following complaints submitted to the Nakhon Nayok Provincial Ombudsman Center and the Ministry of Interior Ombudsman Center. These complaints alleged that the venue had become a hub for illicit gambling, prompting authorities to take action.
During the raid, officials discovered a range of gambling activities, including online betting, reflecting the growing presence of digital wagering in Thailand despite strict gambling laws. The country has long prohibited most forms of gambling, except for state-run lotteries and horse racing, and unlicensed operations like this one remain a major concern for law enforcement.
Charnvirakul emphasized the importance of maintaining social order, stating, “The duty of the Ministry of Interior is to focus on social order to create a peaceful society, an orderly country, and to let go of vices and ensure the safety of the people. Anything that conflicts with this aim is something that we must allow the state mechanism to eliminate completely.”
The crackdown comes at a time of heightened debate over gambling laws in Thailand. Just last month, the Thai Cabinet approved a bill to legalize land-based casinos, a move aimed at curbing illegal gambling and generating tax revenue. However, a recent public poll indicated that the majority of Thai citizens oppose the legalization of both casino and online gambling, citing concerns over social consequences and addiction.
As authorities continue their efforts to clamp down on illegal gambling, this latest bust highlights the ongoing struggle between enforcement and the rising demand for gambling opportunities in the country.
