Betsson Secures Brazilian Gaming Licence, Expanding Presence in South America
Last update: 26 February, 2025
The licence, effective from 25 February 2025, enables Betsson to solidify its position in a market where it has already been active for over a decade.
This approval aligns with Betsson’s broader strategy of geographical expansion, with the company already holding licences in several South American markets, including Argentina, Colombia, and Peru. The introduction of Brazil’s regulatory framework, which officially came into effect on 1 January 2025, has opened up new opportunities for licensed operators, with the Serviço de Processamento de Apostas (SPA) issuing 21 new fixed-odds betting licences earlier this month.
Pontus Lindwall, President and CEO of Betsson AB Group, welcomed the development, stating: “We welcome the introduction of a local regulatory framework in Brazil and are pleased to have obtained a license. This step aligns with our strategy to grow via geographical expansion, and we look forward to offering Brazilian customers a secure and high-quality gaming experience.”
Betsson’s licence approval comes amid increased regulatory oversight in Brazil. Just last week, the SPA introduced enhanced anti-money laundering (AML) requirements for licensed operators following directives from the Ministry of Finance. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and transparent gaming environment as the industry takes shape.
Beyond its regulatory advancements, Betsson has been actively expanding its presence across Latin America. Earlier this month, the company reported a 22% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching €1.1 billion ($1.15 billion) in its Q4 and full-year 2024 financial results. Meanwhile, in January, Betsson extended its sponsorship deal with Argentine football giant Boca Juniors until December 2028, reinforcing its presence in the region’s sports industry. Additionally, Betsson entered into a strategic partnership with GamepIAI, securing coverage of major football leagues.
With its new Brazilian licence, Betsson is set to leverage its extensive market experience to compete in one of the most promising gaming landscapes in Latin America. As the country’s regulatory environment continues to evolve, Betsson’s expansion positions it to capitalize on the growing demand for legal and secure gaming services.
