The opening day of La Liga sees Atlético Madrid travel to the outskirts of Barcelona to face Espanyol - a meeting of two sides with very different ambitions for the season ahead.
Espanyol’s previous campaign was defined by a tense battle against relegation, one they narrowly won in the end. While their summer transfer activity hasn’t dramatically strengthened the squad, their preseason results have been steady: victories over Parralada (4:1), Southampton (2:1), Wolfsburg (1:0), and Union Berlin (1:0), alongside draws with Girona (0:0) and Newcastle (2:2).
Atlético, meanwhile, endured a mixed summer. They fell 0:1 to Porto but defeated Newcastle 2:0, with those fixtures coming after a disappointing Club World Cup group-stage exit. That early elimination, however, may prove beneficial, giving Diego Simeone’s men extra time to rest and refine their tactical approach.
While Atlético often find away matches in La Liga tricky, Espanyol’s limited firepower and overall squad depth make a home upset seem unlikely this time.
