Last season’s Champions League group stage participants Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys will now meet in a decisive playoff for a Europa League main draw spot.
Slovan began their European campaign strongly against Zrinjski, winning 4:0 at home before a 2:2 draw away, but their run in the Champions League ended earlier than expected with elimination against Kairat (0:1, 1:1). Domestically, the Slovak champions have collected seven points from their first three league fixtures, drawing with Prešov (2:2) and defeating Podbrezová (4:1) and Skalica (1:0).
Young Boys, meanwhile, have had a mixed start to the season. The Swiss side recently cruised past Kurtetell 4:1 in the Cup and opened the Super League with a convincing 3:1 victory over Servette. However, their momentum stalled with a poor run that included three winless outings—1:1 against Winterthur, a heavy 1:4 defeat to Basel, and another 1:1 draw with Sion.
Both teams have shown attacking potential but also concerning defensive weaknesses, conceding goals in nearly every outing. With shaky backlines on display, this clash could well see chances at both ends, and it would be no surprise if Slovan and Young Boys exchanged goals in their battle for European progression.
