Thailand: 31 Arrested as Authorities Shut Down Illegal Gambling Den in Bang Lamung

The raid was carried out by a joint team of district officials and local police following an order from Bang Lamung district chief Anusak Phiriyom, according to a report by Khaosod English. The illegal gambling den was located in Soi Phatthanakan 4, Moo 6, Nong Prue, operating discreetly inside a rented house without a street number and surrounded by private residences.

When officers entered the premises, they discovered around 30 gamblers gathered closely around a dealer who was shaking dice and announcing results as bets were placed. Authorities said the group was cheering loudly, drawing complaints from nearby residents and prompting further attention to the location.

Inside the air-conditioned room, officials found a well-organized setup. Seized items included cash, betting boards, dice trays and covers, as well as electronic displays showing dice results. Three CCTV cameras had been installed to monitor players and activity inside the room, giving the operation the appearance of a compact but fully functioning casino.

As officers identified themselves, several gamblers attempted to flee the scene, leading to brief chaos. However, all individuals present were quickly apprehended. The operation was briefly interrupted when a woman in her 50s complained of chest pain and said she had a heart condition. Rescue volunteers were called to the scene, and the woman was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

During questioning, the dealer told investigators that the gambling den had been operating for only about a week. He also made an unusual claim, suggesting the raid occurred because the organizers had “forgotten to make offerings to local spirits,” which he believed brought about their bad luck.

All 31 suspects, along with the seized gambling equipment, were transferred to Nong Prue police station for further legal proceedings. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as part of broader efforts to suppress illegal gambling activities across the district.
