Netherlands vs Japan Prediction 14 June 2026

The Netherlands begin their 2026 World Cup campaign with a challenging Group F encounter against Japan on June 14.

While the Dutch are widely expected to contend for top spot in the group, they face a Japanese side that arrives in outstanding form and with plenty of confidence.

Ronald Koeman's men enjoyed a comfortable qualifying campaign, finishing first in their group ahead of Poland, Finland, Malta, and Lithuania. The Dutch won six of their eight matches, dropping points only in two draws against Poland. However, their recent warm-up fixtures produced mixed results. A surprising 1-0 defeat to Algeria was followed by a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan. Despite the inconsistent scorelines, the Netherlands controlled large portions of both matches and created numerous chances, suggesting their performances were stronger than the results alone indicate.

The main concern for the Dutch heading into the opener is the potential absence of goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who is struggling with injury. Should he miss out, Mark Flekken is expected to step in between the posts.

Japan, meanwhile, continue to establish themselves as one of Asia's strongest footballing nations. The Samurai Blue impressed at the previous World Cup by finishing ahead of both Spain and Germany in their group, and they cruised through qualification once again. Their recent form has been particularly impressive, with six consecutive victories, including a notable 1-0 win over England. Even more remarkable is their defensive record, with five straight clean sheets highlighting the organization and discipline that have become trademarks of Hajime Moriyasu's side.

The injury to captain Wataru Endo is undoubtedly a significant setback. His influence in midfield, particularly in disrupting opposition attacks and leading the press, is difficult to replace. Without him, Japan may find it harder to contain a Dutch attack packed with creativity and technical quality.

This promises to be a closely contested encounter. Japan's defensive structure and recent momentum should make life difficult for the Netherlands, but the Dutch possess greater attacking depth and enough individual quality to find a breakthrough. If Koeman's side can convert the chances they have been creating, they have a strong opportunity to begin their World Cup campaign with three important points.
