The sixth round of La Liga kicks off in Bilbao, where Athletic host struggling Girona.
Athletic began their campaign brightly with three consecutive wins over Sevilla (3–2), Rayo Vallecano (1–0), and Betis (2–1). However, the momentum has since stalled: defeats to Alavés (0–1) and Valencia (0–2), followed by a 0–2 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League, have left the Basques in seventh place with nine points and a perfectly even goal record of 9–9.
Girona, on the other hand, are in complete disarray. The Rojiblancos have picked up just one point from their opening five matches and sit bottom of the table with a disastrous goal difference of 2–15. Their only draw came against Celta (1–1), but heavy defeats to Rayo Vallecano (1–3), Villarreal (0–5), Sevilla (0–2), and Levante (0–4) have underlined their defensive fragility.
On paper, this looks like the perfect opportunity for Athletic to end their recent goal drought and get back to winning ways. With Girona leaking goals and confidence at rock bottom, the Basques will be fully expected to claim all three points — and possibly climb back into the top positions of the league table.
