Austria vs Romania Prediction 7 June 2025

Austria and Romania will face off in the third round of World Cup 2026 qualifying from Group H, with both sides entering the match on notably different trajectories.

Austria, having missed the opening rounds due to their involvement in the Nations League playoffs, recently underwhelmed against Serbia (1:1, 0:2 aggregate). Prior to that, Ralf Rangnick’s men impressed in friendlies last autumn, notably thrashing Norway 5-1 and defeating Kazakhstan 2-0, while also being held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia. However, those results now feel a bit distant, and Austria appears to have lost some of its momentum.

Romania, meanwhile, is in the midst of one of its most promising spells in recent memory. Despite a surprising 0-1 loss to Bosnia, the Tricolorii bounced back with convincing wins over Lithuania (2:1), Kosovo (3:0), Cyprus (4:1), and San Marino (5:1). More importantly, their recent run to the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 has reinvigorated the squad and boosted national confidence. The Romanians are blending attacking sharpness with improved tactical discipline, making them a tough opponent on any ground.

Given Austria’s recent decline and Romania’s form surge, it seems the odds may be skewed too heavily in favor of the hosts. Romania have enough quality and belief to put up a strong fight, even away from home. At the very least, they should be capable of keeping the scoreline tight and possibly walking away with a point—or even a surprise win.
